Sickle

This sickle was made for my then wife. She studied for two years to become a medical herbologist, and then I made her this sickle to harvest herbs.

Handle

The handle is made from juniper and has a top with a strap for carrying with the viking garment, either in the breast/chest buckles or in the belt. As always I've added two stripes to the handle. These are not deeply cut, but are good for feeling control (the hand grip can work more relaxed if it feel texture to be aware of movements) and for identifying the tools as mine.

On the other side of the handle (not seen here) the family owners mark can be seen.

Crafting the handle

Blade

I made the blade at a medieval crafts camp, in a viking age blacksmith workshop. It is fastened to the handle with a tong burnt in place with a false tong.

The blade is curved and very thin to be able to cut grass like herbs. The blade has been normalized, hardened and then tempered to about yellow. It still has some hammer markings since it is not polished in a grinder.

Sheath

The sheath is made from leather and has a strap around the handle to hold it in place and prevent it from wiggling. On the back side there's a belt loop for wearing in the belt. On the front side a decorative embroidery is placed. The mark is an old health symbol.
