Thor's hammer

Ok, so I wanted a hammer to hammer down tent pegs/pins in hard soil. Of course a Thor's hammer is a reasonable choice.

I had a few pieces of solid oak laying around, so why not?

Hammer head

The head of the hammer was given the classical Mjölner shape, and I chisseled out a little flowery pattern to it in an attempt to make it less intimidating, because it got a bit big.

A BIT BIG.

Handle

For handle I also used oak. That's not a really good material for handles since oak has short fibers and tent to break when hit sideways, but that's the wood I brought to the workshop, so...

I set up the handle piece in a lathe and got a bit carried away.

Fastening the handle to the hammer head.

To secure the handle to the hammer head I dripped a hole in the center underside of the hammer head. I made sure the hole was not protruding to the other side. I then slid the handle into the hammer head and drilled a smaller hole from the side of the hammer head through both half the hammer head width and the handle. I then punched a peg with glue into the hole.

This solution has held up for a few years now.
